Check the county directory first
Bucks County’s municipal directory lists Bristol Borough at 250 Pond Street and Bristol Township at 2501 Bath Road, each with its own website. If you are unsure which municipality you are in, ask either office to confirm for your address. Our Bucks County page links the county directory for other towns.
If the property is in Bristol Borough
Start with the Borough’s Code Enforcement page. It posts building guidelines and sample building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and fire subcode permit forms, but says those forms are for reference only: the Borough accepts only original forms, which are available at the Borough office. So finding a form online is not the same as having an application ready. Check with the Borough office which documents your repair needs before mailing anything or making a trip.
If the property is in Bristol Township
Start with the Township’s Permits and Licenses page and its Building & Planning Department. The Township says you can apply online through its Self-Service Portal or in person at the municipal building, and it lists permit categories including renovations, decks, and electrical, plumbing and HVAC work. If you are unsure whether you need a permit, it invites you to call the office. It describes the process as application review, permit issuance, inspections, and a Certificate of Approval once all work is found to comply.
Describe the repair so the office can route it
Give the full address and a plain description of what will change. For example, say whether you are replacing deck boards only or also the frame (see whether deck boards can be replaced without rebuilding the frame), or whether a bathroom project changes plumbing or wiring. These are examples, not a list of exemptions. Ask which applications apply, what documents are needed, who may submit them, and which inspections must be scheduled.
What this page cannot decide
General municipal pages do not decide whether a specific repair needs a permit; the responsible municipality does. Do not carry an answer from the Borough over to the Township or the other way around. For checking contractor registration and the written scope, see what to check before hiring someone for a home repair. More planning questions are on our home repairs and improvements page.
